Home-Start Home Visitor

If you are a parent, or have parenting experience, you could offer practical and emotional support to a young family. As a Home-Start Volunteer you will be part of a team and receive an induction. Home-Start has an accredited training scheme.

Our supported families, like our volunteers, come from all walks of life, and may be finding it hard to cope with parenting for diverse reasons. Their problems may be due to a multiple birth, bereavement, disability, post natal illness or social isolation. We support any family with young children, which asks for our help.

You should be able to commit at least 6 months of your time to Home-Start, and you will have to attend our free Volunteer Preparation Course, with other new volunteers, before meeting your family.

Walk For Health - Walks Leader

Help Richmondshire people get fit! Volunteer as a walks leader, once or twice a month, leading groups around Richmond or Catterick. Enjoy our picturesque local scenery while you all feel the benefit of regular exercise

No formal skills are needed, just good health, a love of walking and a wish to help others enjoy walking for health reasons. Beginners’ walks are less than an hour and on good level footpaths around the towns, and on surrounding field paths. The walks are relaxed and friendly but moving at a pace brisk enough for individuals to feel an increased heart rate and faster breathing.

Swaledale Festival Volunteers

Join the team preparing for the 2010 Swaledale Festival - 29th May to 13th June. Volunteers are now being recruited to act as stewards on guided walks and at concerts. Can you offer admin help in the office or box-office in Hudson House? Or can you volunteer to help with transport for festival performers? Volunteers also act as hosts, offering bed and breakfast accommodation to the artists and performers.

HELPING VULNERABLE YOUNG PEOPLE IN NORTH YORKSHIRE: become a NIGHTSTOP volunteer

Could you help a young person who is temporarily homeless by providing a bed for one night?

York Nightstop Charity is one of around 60 Nightstop Schemes around the UK. It is a very successful emergency response to the problems of homelessness amongst young people. In rural North Yorkshire this is a bigger problem than most people think. This situation can arise for a number of reasons, including family breakdown, eviction from tenancy, fleeing violence or abuse.

Nightstop’s project in Hambleton and Richmondshire provides emergency accommodation for vulnerable young people aged 16-24 (inclusive) in the homes of trained volunteers. Hosts provide a bed, the chance for a bath or shower, an evening meal and breakfast for one night at a time. Young people are referred for accommodation by a variety of local organisations, including the District Councils and the young people’s Personal Advisers from Connexions.

Volunteers come from varied backgrounds, but all offer a breathing space and valuable support to the young person at a crisis point in their lives. According to one family, who currently host with 2 young children, “so many people say they’d like to help the homeless but haven’t got the time. Giving up your spare room for an occasional night takes very little effort but is so rewarding”.

Volunteer drivers provide transport from the organisation making the referral to the host’s house, and back the next morning
