HERRIOT HOSPICE HOMECARE
Herriot Hospice Homecare supports people with a life limiting illness by helping them to remain at home for as long as possible. HHH provides specialist palliative care workers and trained volunteers who give practical help to the patient and their carers.
Volunteers are recruited as Sitters, Drivers and Befrienders:
Sitting Service: trained volunteers stay with the patient in their own home so their carer can have a break for 2/3 hours
Befriending Service: volunteers provide companionship and support and may visit, take the patient shopping or for a drive, or just be there.
Driving Service: help with transport is offered when friends and family are not available, and an ambulance would be too uncomfortable or inappropriate.
To volunteer with patients, there are no particular requirements other than a caring and sympathetic approach, and an interest in people.
To help with publicity, fundraising and general admin, some experience would be an advantage, but enthusiasm and an ability to think outside the box is the main requirement!

Time to spare? GIVE ONE HOUR TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE
A new community befriending service is recruiting volunteers. The scheme aims to combat the loneliness and isolation which can affect older people in rural areas
Funded by Age Concern and based at the St John’s Centre in Catterick Garrison, the project will serve all of Richmondshire.
Volunteers will be given training and will be able to claim mileage expenses. They will visit people in their own homes or perhaps accompany them on outings. CRB checks will be organised and paid for by the scheme.
It is a sad fact of modern life that as we get older and less active, visiting friends becomes more difficult and families often live far away. If you could help a housebound person feel that they are still part of the community, please contact Linda Curran, 01748 832271 or email: stjohns.centre@btinternet.com
HELPING VULNERABLE YOUNG PEOPLE IN NORTH YORKSHIRE: become a NIGHTSTOP volunteer
Could you help a young person who is temporarily homeless by providing a bed for one night?
York Nightstop Charity is one of around 60 Nightstop Schemes around the UK. It is a very successful emergency response to the problems of homelessness amongst young people. In rural North Yorkshire this is a bigger problem than most people think. This situation can arise for a number of reasons, including family breakdown, eviction from tenancy, fleeing violence or abuse.
Nightstop’s project in Hambleton and Richmondshire provides emergency accommodation for vulnerable young people aged 16-24 (inclusive) in the homes of trained volunteers. Hosts provide a bed, the chance for a bath or shower, an evening meal and breakfast for one night at a time. Young people are referred for accommodation by a variety of local organisations, including the District Councils and the young people’s Personal Advisers from Connexions.
Volunteers come from varied backgrounds, but all offer a breathing space and valuable support to the young person at a crisis point in their lives. According to one family, who currently host with 2 young children, “so many people say they’d like to help the homeless but haven’t got the time. Giving up your spare room for an occasional night takes very little effort but is so rewarding”.
Volunteer drivers provide transport from the organisation making the referral to the host’s house, and back the next morning
To find out more about Nightstop or if you are interested in volunteering, contact Wendy Horsman on 0870 2406921 or write to Hambleton and Richmondshire Nightstop, FREEPOST NEA10382 York YO1 8ZB.
